Day Beds and Trundle Beds in the UAE: When and Why They Work

Some pieces of furniture solve one problem well. Day beds and trundle beds solve several at once and in Abu Dhabi & Dubai's mix of apartment living, villa family rooms, and guest-ready homes, that kind of versatility is genuinely useful.

Neither is as widely understood as a standard bed or a sofa bed. So, here's a clear-eyed look at what they are, who they're actually for, and what to look for when you buy.

What Is a Day Bed?

A day bed sits somewhere between a bed and a sofa. It has the dimensions of a single bed (typically 90 x 190 or 200cm) but is styled and positioned to function as a seating or lounging piece during the day, usually with a back panel and sometimes with side bolsters, giving it a more sofa-like silhouette.

The name is occasionally used loosely to describe any upholstered lounging piece, but in furniture terms, a day bed is specifically a single-sleeping-width piece designed to serve both functions.

What Is a Trundle Bed?

A trundle bed is a standard bed typically a single or small double with a second, lower bed frame stored on wheels underneath it. The trundle rolls out when needed, providing a second sleeping surface at floor level.

Some trundle frames are fixed height (roll out and sleep at floor level). Others are pop-up designs where the trundle lifts to the same height as the main bed, creating two sleeping surfaces at the same level useful if you want two proper beds of equal height, or if a floor-level mattress doesn't suit the person using it.

Where Day Beds Work Best in UAE Homes

Study rooms and home offices

A day bed in a home office or study serves two purposes simultaneously: a comfortable spot to sit away from the desk during the day, and a proper sleeping space when guests visit. In a Dubai apartment where a spare bedroom simply isn't an option, this is one of the most practical uses of a single room.

Teen bedrooms and older children's rooms

A day bed works well for older children and teenagers who want their room to feel less "bedroom" and more like a personal space. When styled with cushions and throws, it reads more like a seating area the bed function is there but not the dominant feature of the room.

Reading nooks and spare corners

A narrower alcove or bay window that can't fit a full sofa can often take a day bed. They're narrower than a standard sofa, so they fit spaces that a conventional seating piece can't.

Where Trundle Beds Work Best

Children's rooms with regular sleepovers

A trundle is the most practical sleepover solution for primary-school-age children. By day, the room has a single bed with clear floor space for playing. At night, the trundle rolls out in under a minute and a second child has a proper mattress to sleep on. If you don’t want it as a trundle bed it’s also a great storage solution for toys, bedding, clothes or school books.

Unlike a bunk, there's no height involved  useful for very young children or those who aren't ready for an upper bunk. Unlike a fold-out camp bed, the trundle uses a proper fitted mattress that can be left made up and ready to go.

Guest rooms that double as something else

A home office or hobby room with a trundle bed handles overnight guests without permanently looking like a spare room. Push the trundle back during the day and the room functions as intended. Roll it out when family or friends visit.

Rooms with awkward or low ceilings

In rooms where ceiling height makes a bunk impractical or where you simply don't want the visual weight of a bunk frame a trundle gives you two sleeping spaces with a minimal footprint and no height imposition on the room.

The Pop-Up Trundle: Worth the Upgrade?

Standard trundle beds have the second mattress at floor level when extended. For most children and younger adults this works fine. For older guests, or for anyone with mobility considerations, floor-level sleeping can be genuinely uncomfortable.

A pop-up trundle raises to the same height as the main bed. This typically adds cost but is a meaningful upgrade if the trundle will regularly be used by adults.

At helmii, both configurations are available to order and the main bed frame dimensions can be customised to suit your room precisely.

Choosing the Right Mattress for a Day Bed or Trundle

Day bed mattresses

Because a day bed is used for sitting as well as sleeping, the mattress needs to hold its shape under seated pressure, not just lying weight. A higher-density foam construction or a pocket spring option handles this better than low-density foam, which can develop compression dips at the edges where people habitually sit.

helmii's day bed mattresses are specified with this dual-use reality in mind.

Trundle mattresses

The trundle mattress has a specific constraint: it needs to fit under the main bed frame. Standard trundle mattresses are typically 15cm deep enough for comfortable sleeping, but shallower than a full-depth mattress.

When ordering a trundle bed from helmii, the main bed frame clearance height and trundle mattress depth are matched at the point of manufacture. This eliminates the common problem of buying a trundle separately and finding the mattress is too thick to roll under the main frame.

Styling Day Beds and Trundles

Day Beds

A day bed styled with 3 to 4 cushions, a bolster pillow, and a throw looks like intentional furniture, not a bed waiting to be used. The trick is treating it as a sofa: use scatter cushions in the same palette as the rest of the room rather than pillowcases, and keep bedding out of sight during the day.

Upholstery choice matters more for a day bed than a standard bed, because it's visible from multiple angles in a living or multi-use space. A fabric that looks good from the front, the side, and above will do more work in the room.

Trundle Beds

The trundle, when stored, should be completely invisible. A well-fitted base frame on the main bed, in the same fabric as the frame, means the room looks like any other bedroom. There's nothing to apologise for aesthetically.

Custom Options From helmii

Both day beds and trundle beds are available as custom orders from helmii built to your exact dimensions, in your choice of fabric, with the mattress specified at the same time. If your room requires a non-standard size, or you want a specific headboard profile on a day bed, the made-to-order process handles it.
