What Size Bed Does My Child Need? This is the question every UAE parent eventually types into Google. The answer is more useful than most articles make it because the right size isn't just about the child's height today; it's about the room they're sleeping in, how long you need the bed to last, and the practical realities of UAE apartment and villa living.
Here's the age-by-age breakdown.
Age 0-2: Cot or Cot Bed
A standard cot in the UAE is typically 70cm x 140cm internally. Cot beds extend to and can convert to a toddler bed by removing one side. Both are appropriate until the child starts climbing out which usually happens between 18 months and 2.5 years and is the signal to transition.
The transition away from a cot doesn't have to be to a toddler bed. A floor bed (mattress on a low platform or directly on the floor) is popular in Montessori-influenced households and works well in the UAE as it's warm enough not to matter, and children can get in and out safely without assistance. Some parents go straight to a small single with a rail. Either approach is fine.
Age 2-6: Small Single with Safety Rail
The standard small single in the UAE is 90cm x 190cm or 90cm x 200cm. This is the right size for most children from age 2 through to age 8 or 9 comfortably and often beyond, depending on the child's build.
The critical add-on at this age is a safety rail. A child transitioning from a cot is used to having walls on all sides. A bed rail prevents falls during the adjustment period and during active sleeping. The rail should extend at least two-thirds of the length for children aged 3 to 6.
Buying a toddler bed (70cm x 140cm) is an intermediate step and is a safer way to transition to a larger single bed. However they can work out to be expensive if used only for a short window (typically 24 months) and then replaced. Most children can transition directly to a standard single at age 2-3.
Room clearance needed: A 90cm single with 60cm clearance on the accessible side and 60cm at the foot needs a bedroom at least 210cm wide and 320cm long. Most Dubai & Abu Dhabi children's bedrooms even in compact apartments in JVC, IMPZ, or Al Barsha South can accommodate this. But if space is a premium then a great option is 90x190cm or even 90x180cm. With helmii we can customise to any size depending on your room and specific requirements.
Age 6-10: Standard Single or Small Double
At this point, a well-sized child is approaching 130 to 140cm tall and will still have plenty of room in a 90cm x 200cm single. The question isn't usually "is the bed too small? It's more about whether the room as a whole is working for a child who's using it for studying, playing, and hosting the occasional friend.
This is also the age at which Storage under the Bed becomes more valuable. A 7-year-old's bedroom in Dubai & Abu Dhabi accumulates books, art supplies, games, school equipment, and seasonal clothing faster than most parents anticipate. A Storage Bed with an ottoman lift at this stage is one of the most practical decisions you can make.
If your child is already at the taller end for their age and you're thinking about longevity, you can move to a Small Double (120cm x 200cm) at age 8-9. This gives them room to sprawl, read, and have a friend sleep over, and the bed will likely see them through to 18. The trade-off is floor space a small double in a compact apartment bedroom (under 3m wide) will feel significantly more room-consuming than a single.
Room clearance needed for a small double: 120cm bed + 60cm on each side = 240cm minimum room width. That works in most Dubai & Abu Dhabi villa children's rooms and in the larger apartment bedrooms found in developments like Arabian Ranches, Springs Townhouses, or Palm Jumeirah villas.
Age 10-14: Small Double or Double
A small double (120cm x 200cm) is a comfortable and proportionate size for early teenagers in most UAE homes. It occupies less floor space than a standard double, gives meaningful room to grow, and doesn't look oversized in a bedroom that's transitioning from children's to teenage aesthetic.
A standard double (140cm x 200cm) works well in larger rooms, master bedrooms in villas that have been repurposed as a teenager's room, for example. In a villa in Jumeirah, Al Barsha 1, or Umm Suqeim, where bedrooms can be 4m x 4m or larger, a small double looks slightly undersized and a standard double works proportionally.
At this age, the child's input on the bed headboard style, fabric colour, overall design starts to matter more. A teenager who has had a say in what their room looks like will take better care of it. Upholstered bed frames in a teen-appropriate colour like a muted green, a soft navy or a natural linen are popular choices that bridge the transition from children's to adult aesthetic.
Age 14+: Adult Single, Small Double, or Double
By mid-teenage years, the practical answer is to buy for the adult they're becoming rather than the child they are now. A standard single (90cm x 200cm) will feel narrow for a teenage boy at 180cm tall within two years. A small double or double at this point is the better long-term investment.
In UAE households particularly in villas in Mirdif, Arabian Ranches, or The Meadows where the expectation is that children will live at home through university, a proper double bed in the teenager's room makes the room work for a young adult without a refit. The frame, if well-made, will still be in use at 22.
Bed Sizing for Specific Dubai & Abu Dhabi Room Types
Compact Apartment Bedroom (Under 3m Wide)
A standard single (90cm x 200cm) is the most practical choice. If storage is a priority, a Custom Made Storage Bed at exactly the right width to maximise the room without creating awkward clearances is worth considering.
Standard Apartment Bedroom (3m - 3.6m Wide)
A single to small double works here, depending on age. At 3.2m width, a 90cm single leaves comfortable clearance on both sides. A 120cm small double is tight but workable if one side is against a wall.
Villa Children's Bedroom (3.5m+ Wide)
More flexibility. A small double is proportionate here for most ages over 8. Consider how the room will evolve a bed sized for a 10-year-old that still works for a 17-year-old is a better investment than one that needs replacing at 13.
Shared Children's Room (Two Children)
Bunk beds are the most space-efficient solution for two children in a single room freeing the full footprint of one bed as usable floor space. The age constraint (top bunk for 6+) and ceiling clearance are the key variables.
The Sizing Mistake Most UAE Parents Make
Buying too small and replacing too soon. This happens because a bed for a 4-year-old feels proportionate at 90cm x 140cm but a standard single at 90cm x 200cm is also appropriate and comfortable at that age, and it's still the right size at 12.
The cost of replacing a bed that the child "outgrew" in three years is significantly higher than the slight awkwardness of a younger child in a full-length single. And in Dubai & Abu Dhabi's furniture market, where delivery and setup costs are real, that replacement cycle adds up.
Buy for where the child will be in five years, not where they are today.

FAQ: Kids Bed Sizes in Dubai & Abu Dhabi
What size bed does a 5-year-old need?
A standard single (90cmx 200cm) with a safety rail. This size works comfortably from age 2 through to early secondary school.
When should I move my child from a cot to a bed?
When they start climbing out of the cot typically between 18 months and 3 years. Many children can go directly to a standard single with a bed rail, skipping the toddler bed stage entirely.
What is the difference between a UAE single and a UK single?
UAE standard single is 90cm x 200cm. UK single is 90cm x 190cm 10cm shorter. If you're ordering a mattress separately, confirm which dimension the frame uses.
Should I buy a bigger bed so my child can grow into it?
Within reason, yes. A standard single at age 3 is appropriate and will still be the right size at 12. A small double at age 8 will be suitable at 16. Sizing up by one category and buying quality is more cost-effective than buying for the current year.
