Buying something online feels normal now. Buying a bed still doesn't, and the reason is obvious — you're going to spend a third of your life on it and you can't lie down on a photograph.
The hesitation is reasonable. What follows is what's actually worth checking before you commit, including the parts that are genuinely a risk and the ones that aren't as scary as they look.
How do you judge a fabric you can't touch?
You don't. You order swatches and you look at them in your own room.
Screens lie about colour in a specific and predictable way: they render everything under a neutral white light, and Dubai, Abu Dhabi or UAE daylight is nothing like neutral white. A grey that looks cool and soft online will often read warmer and lighter on a wall facing morning sun through full-height glazing.
The method that works takes two days and costs nothing. Order the free swatches, tape them to the actual wall where the bed will go, and look at them at 7am, at 2pm and again under lamplight at 9pm. Whichever one still looks right in all three is your answer.
Swatches tell you about colour and texture. They tell you very little about how a headboard's shape will sit in the room, which is a matter of measurements rather than material.
What the 40-night sleep promise actually covers
Sleep trials are the standard reassurance in this category, and they're worth understanding precisely rather than vaguely, because the details do real work.
The 40-night promise gives you forty nights from delivery to decide. That length is deliberate — a new mattress typically needs around thirty days before your body stops comparing it to the old one, and most people who dislike a mattress in week one feel differently by week five.
Now the parts people miss. It's an exchange, not a refund: you can swap for any other mattress in the range and pay the difference if it costs more, but money doesn't come back. It requires a helmii waterproof mattress protector bought at the time you order — without one, the trial doesn't apply. It covers one mattress and up to two pillows per order. Collection happens within fourteen days of you getting in touch, and a mattress that comes back marked or soiled you can be charged for.
And it doesn't cover ordering the wrong size. That's on the measuring, which is the theme of this whole article.
Is that generous or restrictive? Genuinely somewhere in between. It removes the risk of choosing the wrong comfort level, which is the risk people actually lose sleep over. It doesn't remove the risk of changing your mind about buying a bed at all.
Warranties, in plain English
There are three different lengths on the site and they cover different things.
Mattresses carry up to a ten-year warranty against manufacturing defects — a visible indentation of more than an inch (depending in timeframe), or foam that splits or cracks under normal use. What it doesn't cover is a mattress simply getting softer over time, which is normal, or liquid damage, tears and burns, which are not defects.
Two conditions sit inside that warranty and both are easy to comply with and easy to forget. The mattress needs a firm, solid base sturdy enough to carry it — a slatted frame with wide gaps or a sagging old base can void a claim. And it wants rotating 180 degrees every three to six months.
Custom beds carry up to five years. The significant thing there isn't the length, it's the sentence next to it, which we'll come to.
Other bedroom furniture carries one year on materials and workmanship. Bedding accessories can be returned within 14 days if they're unused and in their packaging.
The real risk: custom means you can't change your mind
This is the part to be straight about, because it's the genuine downside of ordering made-to-measure rather than off the shelf.
A Design Your Own bed can't be returned or refunded unless there's a manufacturing fault. It was built to your dimensions in your fabric; there's no shelf to put it back on. That's not a policy quirk, it's the arithmetic of custom furniture, and every maker in the city works the same way.
Which is exactly why the swatch step matters so much, and why it's worth being slightly annoying with us before you order rather than after. Ask whether the piece splits for access. A supplier who finds those questions tedious is telling you something useful.
How long does a custom bed take in the UAE?
Around two to three weeks for a made-to-order build, with delivery and assembly included and free across Dubai, Abu Dhabi city limits, Al Ain, Ajman and Sharjah. Abu Dhabi's Western Region and the northern emirates carry a delivery charge.
What moves that timeline is usually fabric availability rather than the build itself. A fabric held in stock goes straight into production; one that has to be brought in adds time. Worth asking at the point of ordering if you have a date you're working towards — a handover, a family visit, a lease starting.
Plan for three weeks and treat anything faster as a bonus. Expedited delivery exists but it costs, and it's not always possible on a custom piece regardless of what you're willing to pay.
The step that catches people out: lift access
More custom furniture orders go wrong at this stage more than at any other, and it's entirely preventable.
Large upholstered pieces cannot be carried up staircases — they're too heavy and too awkward, and in a tower it isn't a realistic option at any price. That means the service lift has to fit the item. Not the passenger lift; buildings often have a smaller one reserved for moves.
So before ordering, measure three things: the internal dimensions of the service lift including its diagonal, your apartment's front door, and the tightest corner between the lift and the bedroom. That last one — the dogleg in the entrance hall — is the one people forget, and it's frequently the binding constraint. Please note all helmii Storage Bed bases are assembled and in two parts. This is really important for tight turning spaces.
Ask whether the headboard splits into sections. Some designs are built specifically for apartment access; helmii's Compton & Bedford Trip wide wall bed, for instance, separates into three parts for exactly this reason.
Two practical notes. Responsibility for access sits with the buyer, so an item that won't fit isn't something a supplier can undo. And rescheduling a booked delivery carries a re-delivery fee and a wait for the next slot, so it's worth confirming your building's move-in rules and lift booking requirements before you accept a delivery date rather than after.
A short checklist before you press order
● Swatches taped to the wall and checked in morning light, afternoon light and lamplight.
● Bedroom measured, including the walkway you need around the bed.
● Service lift, front door and tightest corner measured — and whether the piece splits.
● Finished dimensions confirmed in writing, not assumed from a product photo.
● Mattress protector added to the order if you want the sleep trial to apply.
● Building's delivery rules and lift booking checked with the management office.
None of that takes more than an evening. Skipping it is how a well-chosen bed turns into a bad week.
FAQ: Buying a bed online in Dubai
Is it safe to buy a mattress online in the UAE?
For a mattress, largely yes — a sleep trial covers the main risk, which is choosing the wrong comfort level. Read the trial's conditions rather than the headline number.
Can I return a custom bed in Dubai?
Not unless there's a manufacturing fault. Made-to-measure pieces are built to your specification, so the swatch and measuring steps do the work a return policy would otherwise do.
How long does a custom bed take to be delivered in Dubai?
Around two to three weeks for a made-to-order build, including free delivery and assembly across Dubai, Abu Dhabi city limits, Al Ain, Ajman and Sharjah.
What happens if my bed doesn't fit in the lift?
It can't be taken up the stairs, so it can't be delivered — which is why measuring the service lift beforehand matters. Asking whether the design splits into sections solves this in most buildings.
Do I need a mattress protector for the 40-night trial?
Yes. A helmii waterproof protector bought at the time of ordering is a condition of the promise.
If you're weighing up an order and something on this list is making you hesitate, that's usually a sign there's a question worth asking rather than a reason not to buy. Send the details over on WhatsApp 0529 55 44 69 or Contact Us — room dimensions, lift size, what you're considering — and we'll tell you honestly whether it works, including if the answer is that a different piece would suit you better. Swatches are free and worth ordering first either way. Order them now!
